Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) Policy

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) Policy

[Journal of Sport & Movement Sciences] adopts a clear, ethical, and transparent policy regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in scholarly publishing. This policy is designed to ensure scientific integrity, accountability, and transparency in line with the journal’s mission in sports sciences and its strict adherence to the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Definition of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)

Generative AI (GenAI) refers to artificial intelligence systems capable of producing human-like content, including text, images, and data. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Language models (e.g., ChatGPT) used for drafting or editing manuscripts
  • Analytical tools (e.g., machine learning algorithms) used for processing sports performance data
  • Image generation tools (e.g., DALL·E) used for creating figures, diagrams, or visual content

Acceptable Use and Author Responsibility

The use of GenAI is permitted only under conditions that ensure full human responsibility for all aspects of the manuscript.

1. Writing Assistance

Permitted Use:

  • Language editing, grammar improvement, and text refinement
  • Summarization and structural enhancement of manuscripts

Limitations and Requirements:

  • GenAI must not replace original scholarly thinking or intellectual contribution
  • The conceptual framework, interpretation, and conclusions must remain the responsibility of the authors
  • Authors must critically review and verify all AI-generated content

2. Data Analysis

Permitted Use:

  • Processing large or complex datasets
  • Supporting performance analysis (e.g., GPS tracking, motion analysis)

Requirements:

  • All AI-generated outputs must be validated against raw data
  • Interpretation of results must be conducted by the authors
  • GenAI must not replace scientific reasoning or decision-making

Disclosure Requirements and Authorship

Transparency and accountability are mandatory.

  • AI Cannot Be an Author: Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors
  • Human Responsibility: Authors are fully responsible for all content, including AI-assisted sections
  • Originality: AI-generated content must be original and free of plagiarism
  • All submissions are subject to plagiarism screening (e.g., Turnitin or similar tools)

Mandatory Disclosure

Authors must clearly disclose any use of GenAI in the following sections:

  • Methods Section: For AI tools used in data analysis
  • Acknowledgments: For AI-assisted writing or language editing
  • Tools Used: Authors must specify the platform, model (e.g., GPT-based tools), and purpose of use

Ethical Considerations and Compliance

  • Data Integrity: Fabrication, falsification, or manipulation of data using AI or any other tools is strictly prohibited
  • Citation Accuracy: All AI-generated references must be verified for correctness and formatted according to the journal’s citation style (e.g., APA 7th edition)
  • Compliance: Failure to comply with this policy (e.g., undisclosed AI use) may result in manuscript rejection or retraction in accordance with COPE guidelines

Policy Statement

This policy recognizes GenAI as a supportive tool in academic writing and research, while emphasizing that full scientific responsibility remains with the human authors at all times.
